MSM - Methyl Sulfone

MSM (Methyl Sulfone or Dimethylsulfone) is an organic sulphur compound that is found naturally in some fruits and vegetables, cow's milk and meat. It is closely related to Dimethyl Sulfoxide (DMSO). It consists of two hydrocarbon units attached to one atom of sulfur and two oxygen atoms. Hence, it is one-third sulfur by weight. Sulfur is vital to the growth of hair, nails, organs and connective tissue, and is necessary for the production of insulin and the metabolism of carbohydrates. MSM has been suggested as an anti-inflammatory for such conditions as osteoarthritis, arthritis, allergies and sports injuries.

Research has shown that MSM may be effective for the treatment of allergies, pain syndromes, athletic injuries, and bladder disorders. However, the role of elemental sulfur in human nutrition is only beginning to be understood. MSM is not intended to cure, treat, diagnose or prevent any disease. It is possible that additional research will reveal more uses for this naturally-occurring sulfur compound. Researchers at the American Institute for Biosocial and Medical Research note that the low toxicological profiles of these sulfur compounds, combined with promising therapeutic effects, warrant continued human clinical trails.
